After taking over the creative helm of Jil Sander in Spring of 2018, Luke and Lucie Meier have brought an element of emotion and whimsy to the fashion house’s renowned minimalist design. For Jil Sander Menswear, this manifests in silhouettes shifting towards the softer and more relaxed, with exaggerated plays on proportion in the form of extralong sleeves extending past models’ hands, boxy jackets with fluid fabric draping from oversize shoulders, or voluminous sculptural A-line bermuda shorts. New hand crafted elements also play a role in giving the garments a more soulful and emotional feeling, with braided straps on the tangle bags, knitted applique details, and hand dyed/hand printed textiles featuring prominently across both men’s and women’s collections.
In these lug-sole derby shoes, the Meier’s playfulness comes to the fore. A heavily panelized sneaker upper is rendered in a compelling and unexpected mix of materials that contrasts the natural and the futuristic–shiny patent leather is cut with soft, textured suede, cotton, and linen underlays. The clinical optic white of the patent is softened by the cream tones of the natural fibers, giving the shoe a decidedly ‘formal yet lived-in’ look from the start. The upper is nested within an extra high black textured sidewall that leads to an exaggerated lug-sole below. The black colorblocking and size of the sole both play on footwear proportions, creating a shoe that is halfway sleek halfway chunky–with enough heft to anchor the wider bottoms of the new Jil Sander.
